Professional career
Dr Joanne Peat is a Specialist in Endodontics who focuses on managing patients with endodontic disease at Meadows Dental Clinic. She started her career in Lanarkshire where she worked as a Dental Vocational Trainee from 2013 to 2014, providing general dentistry to the local population. She went on to complete further training as a Dental Core Trainee at the Royal London Hospital from 2014 to 2015, where she gained experience in multiple areas of dentistry. She then spent five years with the Ministry of Defence from 2015 to 2020, providing dental care for service personnel, while also holding a teaching position at Glasgow Dental School. Currently, she divides her time between Edinburgh and Shetland, where she works in the Public Dental Service, managing referrals for complex endodontic cases. She held the position of Senior Clinical Lecturer in Endodontics at the University of Edinburgh from 2023 to 2026, where she was involved in teaching and training postgraduate students.
Education
Dr Peat qualified as a dentist from the University of Aberdeen in 2013. Her interest in endodontics led her to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh. In 2025, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) in Endodontology with distinction, and was also awarded the Nairn Wilson Medal for clinical and academic excellence. In November 2025, she was awarded the Specialty Fellowship in Endodontics (FEndo) by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Endodontics is also better known as Root Canal Treatment. Root Canal Treatment becomes necessary when the nerve of a tooth becomes irreversibly damaged, and therefore has to be surgically removed.
A Prosthodontist undertakes the process of rebuilding or replacement of missing teeth. They are trained to deal with the aesthetic and functional challenges that replacement of teeth present.
Periodontal disease affects the gums, bone and other supporting tissues of the teeth. Most individuals suffer gum inflammation from time to time, around 10% of the population appear to suffer from the more severe forms.
